Tom started playing drums when he was eight years old. At the age of twelve, he developed his musical skill as a multi-instrumentalist and singer songwriter. His musical ability was first noticed by the public at the age of fourteen when Tom won Australia's most prestigious drum competition, the Billy Hyde Drum Playoffs.
Commercial success began when [is] was announced the inaugural winner of the Triple J Unearthed High competition with their first radio single "Cult Romance" in 2008. "Cult Romance" went on to receive high rotation airplay, becoming one of triple j's most-played songs in 2008, and was also released as a free MP3 (getting over 35,000 downloads).
After winning this competition, [is] changed their name to Tom Ugly so that it was searchable on the internet and a number of articles were written about the talent of this emerging artist. Most notably, the Sydney Morning Herald printed a full page article on their daily issue, considering the question of whether Tom Ugly would be the next 'Silverchair'?.[1] A few months later they were selected as one of the feature artists for triple j Next Crop in 2008 with their second radio single, "Roll Again".
The debut Tom Ugly EP was released on 21 August 2009, featuring four high rotation Triple J radio hits, "Cult Romance", "Roll Again", "Bad with Love" and "All I Wanna Know". It peaked at #23 on the ARIA Singles Chart and #3 on the AIR Singles Chart, remaining on both charts for a consecutive 11 weeks.[2]
After the release of the Tom Ugly EP, the band toured around Australia supporting acts like Groove Armada, Simian Mobile Disco, Art vs Science, Sia, The Grates and Evermore.
After the completion of High School, Tom Ugly traveled through the Americas in 2010 collaborating with international artists and writing/recording what is suspected to be a double EP or album.
